Uluwatu Surf Villas
Bali · Indonesia
Each villa at Uluwatu Surf Villas was built by in-house carpenters from Jepara, Central Java, using reclaimed teak and ironwood. No two are identical. The property sits on the cliff above the break — cliff stairs take you to the channel in four minutes. Morning Light Yoga Studio is set into the jungle below. The same team co-founded Project Clean Uluwatu, which built the greywater systems and rainwater catchment that keeps the beach below functional — over a million litres collected annually. Gestalten Press put the villas in Out Of The Woods. The Bukit's best breaks are a short scooter ride in either direction.

The design
Individual villas built from reclaimed teak by in-house carpenters. Each one different.

The yoga
Morning Light sits in the jungle with the ocean beyond it. The studio has been here long enough that the trees have grown around it.
Morning Light Yoga Studio is open-air, set into the jungle below the villas — ocean visible through the canopy, classes morning and evening. Resident teachers, not rotating instructors. In Uluwatu, where most cliff-top properties treat yoga as an amenity, Morning Light is the reason some guests come specifically.

The surf
The stairs take four minutes. Uluwatu is in front of you before you've fully woken up.
Uluwatu is a long left-hander breaking off the cliff in multiple sections — from the outside peak through to the cave. The cliff stairs take you to the channel; Padang Padang is a short scooter ride south, Impossibles and Bingin in the other direction. The Bukit concentrates more quality surf per square kilometre than almost anywhere on earth.

The sustainability
Over a million litres of rainwater collected annually. The beach below is cleaner because this hotel exists.
Uluwatu Surf Villas co-founded Project Clean Uluwatu — greywater systems, waste-water management, water gardens built to protect the beach and reef below. Rainwater catchment collects over a million litres annually. The reclaimed teak and ironwood came from deconstructed structures, not new harvest.
The food
Breakfast included, open-air, above the Indian Ocean. Balinese cooking, locally sourced, nothing overthought.
Balinese and Indonesian cooking — rice, fish, vegetables, spice. Breakfast included. The bar is worth staying at after dark.
