Hotel Alaia

Hotel Alaia sits on the dunes above Punta de Lobos — one of the Americas' first World Surfing Reserves — which is both the reason it exists and the thing it is careful not to overwhelm. The architecture integrates into the dune landscape using recycled timber and local black rock, low-impact enough that the point break visible from every room feels like the point rather than the backdrop. Twelve bungalows, all the same size and orientation, all with floor-to-ceiling Pacific windows and private terraces. The restaurant operates on a strict 100km sourcing radius — hand-caught fish, Cáhuil salt from the nearby flats, Colchagua Valley wine from inland. Design Hotels member.

The sustainability

Patagonia and Save the Waves purchased 4.5 acres at Punta de Lobos specifically to protect it. The hotel is built on the edge of that land.

Patagonia collaborated with Save the Waves to purchase and permanently protect 4.5 acres at Punta de Lobos — the land the hotel sits adjacent to. The architecture uses recycled timber and local black rock, built low-impact into the dune landscape with a biointensive garden on site. The sourcing radius for the restaurant doubles as a sustainability position: nothing imported, nothing from outside the region.

The surf

Punta de Lobos was declared a World Surfing Reserve in 2011. The hotel was built to face it.

Punta de Lobos is a left-hand point that holds size — walls up to 20 feet in deep winter, consistent performance surf through autumn and spring, manageable and shapely in summer. The hotel has boards and organises surf lessons at every level. Infiernillo, a faster and hollower left closer to town, is a short drive for when Lobos is too big or too crowded.

The food

Everything on the menu travelled less than 100 kilometres to get there.

The kitchen sources exclusively within a 100km radius — hand-caught fish from local waters, salt from the Cáhuil flats a short drive away, produce from farms in the O'Higgins hinterland, wine from the Colchagua Valley. The menu changes with what's available. The restaurant faces the point.
