THE BEST SURF & YOGA HOTELS · SOUTH AFRICA
Cape Town
A city built between a mountain and the Atlantic, with a surf coast that runs south to Cape Point and north toward Dungeons. The post-apartheid design scene that emerged here is internationally recognised and specifically South African. The art arrived before the hotels did, and the better hotels know it.
Cape Town is a coastal city built around a mountain, with the Atlantic in front and Table Mountain behind — geography that is always present and that shaped everything that grew up between them. The post-apartheid cultural negotiation is ongoing and visible: in the architecture, the art, and a design scene that is internationally recognised and specifically South African. The Everard Read gallery has been running since 1913. The contemporary art that followed is entirely its own.
The surf runs along the Atlantic seaboard north and south of the city, with Dungeons off Hout Bay holding the serious big-wave swells, Long Beach and Big Bay working most winter days, and the breaks around Noordhoek and Llandudno filling in between. Season is April through September. The hotels in this collection sit across Clifton, Bantry Bay, and the Gardens neighbourhood — three different relationships with the city.
