The Inn at Newport Ranch

Newport was a logging town on the Mendocino Coast until the redwood boom ended and everyone left. The land sat for decades. In the early 2000s, former Manhattan banker and conservationist Will Jackson found it via a Wall Street Journal classified ad, spent years piecing together over 2,200 acres of coastline, coastal prairie, old-growth forest, and active cattle ranch, and built a lodge that opened to guests in 2015. Jackson is now 97 and still lives on the property. The Inn at Newport Ranch has sixteen rooms and suites across the Arts and Crafts main lodge and several outbuildings, each different, each using reclaimed and locally milled timber, each with a private terrace or deck and a hot tub. Seven microclimates across the estate — from fern-carpeted redwood forest to wind-stripped coastal bluff to working cattle pasture. A mile and a half of private Pacific coastline. Twenty-five miles of trails. Three thousand redwood seedlings planted per year. The tasting menu is foraged, hyper-local, and cooked over live fire.

The Design

A former logging town rebuilt as a lodge using reclaimed and locally milled timber. Will Jackson is 97 and still lives here.

Arts and Crafts architecture built from materials sourced within Mendocino County — reclaimed wood, lumber milled on the property, stacked stone, redwood beams. The Captain's Quarters suite has 180-degree ocean views and nautical timber panelling. Tree trunks grow through rooms in the Redwood House. The historic water tower has been converted to a rooftop hot tub. No two rooms are the same.

The Sustainability

3,000 redwood seedlings planted per year. A working cattle ranch on a conservation mission. The logging town that became a forest again.

Jackson's conservation model runs alongside the working cattle ranch — regenerative ranching methods, restoration partnerships with the Redwood Forest Foundation, native forest stewarded in collaboration with local organisations. The construction used only reclaimed and locally sourced materials. A redwood seedling is planted with every guest stay.
