Lumeria Maui
Guests at Lumeria must enrol in classes as a condition of staying. That is the hotel's position, stated clearly, and the reason the people who come here come back. The 1910 craftsman building — the oldest wooden structure on Maui, set on eight acres of Upcountry plateau between Paia and Makawao, with the Pacific visible on one horizon and Haleakalā on the other — runs daily programmes in yoga, meditation, healing arts, horticulture, and Hawaiian culture from a schedule that assumes you came to practice something rather than just arrive somewhere. The twenty-four rooms are individually designed with organic Hawaiian interiors. The Wooden Crate restaurant sources from the property's two hundred species of edible plants: mango, lilikoi, guava, avocado, papaya, supplemented by fish from Maui waters and grass-fed meats raised on the island. The saltwater pool sits above the grounds. Paia is ten minutes down the hill. Ho'okipa is twenty. The reason you're not already on your way there is that Lumeria has made a case for staying.

The Design
The oldest wooden structure on Maui. Built in 1910. The Baldwins named it for a son who died at twenty-four.
The renovation preserved the Craftsman bones of the 1910 building and introduced Balinese-Japanese design elements — four-poster beds, pebble-floor rain showers, nine-foot ceilings in the bathrooms, meditation huts and a stone labyrinth on the grounds. Locally sourced timber and natural river rock throughout. No air conditioning needed at the Upcountry elevation.
