Stilwell Hotel
The owners of Carmel's Tradewinds Inn — the Japanese-inspired boutique that has been on the town's books since 1959 — opened a sister property one block away in 2024 and named it after Susan Stilwell, the owner's daughter whose style overhaul of the original put it in Architectural Digest. The Stilwell is the modern counterpart to the Tradewinds' vintage character: forty-two rooms in neutral tones, natural materials — hardwood floors, linen, cotton, raffia, marble bathrooms — and a courtyard of fire pits, water features, and a clay pizza oven that is the real social centre of the hotel. Carmel Beach is an eight-minute walk. The town itself — one square mile, nearly a hundred galleries, no street addresses, no chain restaurants, no neon signs by municipal decree — is on the doorstep. Post Ranch Inn and the Big Sur coast are thirty-five minutes south on Highway 1. The Stilwell is where you stay to be in Carmel rather than above it.
