Casa Laguna Hotel & Spa

Casa Laguna was built in the early 1900s by architect Arthur Benton for Frank Miller — the same partnership that designed the Mission Inn in Riverside. Artists moved in during the 1930s and 40s, drawn by Laguna Beach's established art colony. The hotel that grew around the original buildings was designated a Registered Historic Structure in 2000. In 2014 PRG acquired it and handed it to Martyn Lawrence Bullard — one of Architectural Digest's top 100 interior designers — with a brief to restore rather than rebuild. The 23-room result is Spanish Colonial architecture with Moroccan tiles imported from Marrakech, Bullard's own fabrics and wallpapers, hand-painted furniture, and cerulean velvet sofas that echo the Pacific below. Victoria Beach — one of the least-crowded beaches in Laguna — is directly across the highway. Casa Laguna was the first hotel in the area to earn a Green Eco-Leaf sustainability rating. It earns its place in the collection because the building was interesting before the designer arrived.

The design

Spanish Colonial architecture built for Frank Miller in the early 1900s. The Moroccan tiles came from Marrakech. Martyn Lawrence Bullard brought both together.

Twenty-three suites each uniquely designed — custom marble vanities, handcrafted natural fiber mattresses, Bullard's Shambala fabric on the bed panels. The Moorish tiles on the bathroom floors are repeated in the lobby — a unifying detail that makes the small spaces read as larger.
