Drift San José del Cabo
Drift opened in 2012 as the first hotel on what's now one of the most interesting streets in San José del Cabo's Gallery District, positioned against the resort corridor from the start. There are no televisions. Complimentary surfboards sit by the door, with Costa Azul and the East Cape point breaks within reach. The hotel has since grown to twenty-nine rooms, but the original position — and the Thursday night taco truck in the courtyard — never changed.

The hotel

The design
Stu Waddell designed the original eight rooms himself. RIMA designed the expansion to twenty-nine.
Stu Waddell bought a run-down six-apartment block in San José del Cabo's Gallery District in 2012 and designed the conversion himself — eight rooms, no televisions, built for travellers who'd rather spend an evening at the Thursday art walk than by an ocean-view pool. When TMC Hospitality later expanded the property to twenty-nine rooms, they brought in local firm RIMA rather than starting over.

The food
Thursday night, a taco truck in the courtyard. Locals and guests, same table, since the beginning.
A taco truck sets up in the courtyard every Thursday — open to anyone in the neighbourhood, not just guests. It's been running since Drift opened in 2012.
