Nest Tulum

James Chippendale sold his music company of twenty years, left Austin, and spent three months driving through Mexico looking for the right objects before he opened a hotel. Woodworkers outside Cobá. Lamps and textiles from Mérida. Hacienda antiques from warehouses in San Miguel de Allende. The rooms are built with hand-laid stone and Chukum plaster — a traditional Mayan lime-stucco that regulates temperature without air conditioning — and everything in them arrived by specific decision rather than catalogue. Thirteen rooms and a four-bedroom villa that was a private home before the hotel existed. NÜ Tulum, the Michelin-recognised restaurant managed by the same Namron Hospitality group, is next door. The founder's music background shows up in the in-room playlists and the occasional guest-DJ evening. Neither is advertised. Nest is one of the original properties on this stretch of beach, and it still feels like it belongs to someone rather than something.

Nest — THE DESIGN

THE DESIGN

Root-woven light fittings. Antique hacienda furniture. Custom woodwork from outside Cobá. Nothing here came from a supplier catalogue.

The rooms carry the evidence of the three-month drive: a specific lamp from Mérida that couldn't be replicated, a drawer from San Miguel that no other hotel in Tulum has, woodwork made for the space by craftsmen who knew what it was for. The architecture — hand-laid stone, Chukum walls, local timber — gives the objects a setting that belongs to the same sensibility. Most boutique hotels are specified. Nest was assembled.

THE YOGA

Vinyasa and restorative flow on the beach. Cacao ceremonies. The La Valise Spa next door for everything else. Nest is small enough that none of it feels programmatic.

On-site yoga runs power vinyasa and restorative flow, both beachfront. Cacao ceremonies and guided meditation alongside. For deeper bodywork, La Valise Spa — Namron's dedicated spa property immediately next door — runs the full treatment menu: Mayan-technique massages, facials, hydrotherapy. At thirteen rooms, none of the wellness offering feels like a hotel amenity. It feels like something the guests arranged for themselves.

THE SUSTAINABILITY

Zero Waste Establishment Certificate, 2023. Plastic-free. A saltwater-to-drinking-water system on site. The Tulum Pledge asks guests to commit to conservation behaviours before they leave.

Nest holds a Zero Waste Establishment Certificate from municipal, state, and federal bodies — earned in 2023, one of the few on the beach road. Single-use plastics are banned. Toiletries are locally sourced and eco-certified. An on-site system converts saltwater to drinking water. The Tulum Pledge — a conservation commitment created by Namron Hospitality's founder — is offered to every guest. Solar panels power the private villa.
