Shutters on the Beach
Shutters on the Beach opened on Santa Monica Beach in 1993 and has not needed to change its position since. The hotel is directly on the sand — not across from the beach, not near the beach, on the beach — and the New England shingle architecture with blue shutters and white clapboard is the most recognisable building on the Santa Monica coastline. Two hundred and ninety-eight rooms. The pool deck overlooks the Pacific. The restaurant is One Pico. The art collection throughout the hotel has been assembled over thirty years by owner Robert Maguire and is one of the strongest collections of California art in any hotel anywhere. The ownership is independent — Edward Thomas Company, founded by Robert Maguire — and the hotel has the character of a property that has never had to answer to anyone except its owner and its guests.

The design
The New England shingle architecture on Santa Monica Beach has been the same since 1993. It has never needed to change.
Blue shutters, white clapboard, a fireplace in every room. The art collection assembled over thirty years by Robert Maguire covers the walls — California art, specifically chosen, never rotated for trend. One Pico at the base faces the ocean.
