The Surfrider
·
The Surfrider sits on the Pacific Coast Highway directly opposite First Point Malibu — the right-hander that named a culture. Twenty rooms, rebuilt from a 1950s motel by the people who own it, designed in-house without an interior decorator. Raw wood, natural stone, hand-painted ceramic tiles, reclaimed floors throughout. No televisions. The organic rooftop kitchen opens for breakfast at eight. Complimentary surfboards are available at the front. The walk to the water takes ninety seconds.

First Point Malibu is a right-hander that peels for two hundred metres on a good south swell — one of the defining waves of California surf culture. The Surfrider sits directly opposite; complimentary surfboards available. The crowd is unavoidable in summer — be in the water before nine.

The sustainability
The hotel has organised paddle-out protests and supplies reef-safe sunscreen in every bathroom. The environmental position is not decoration.
The Surfrider was an early Surfrider Foundation partner — plastic-free, organic locally sourced menu, reef-safe sunscreen in the bathrooms. The hotel has organised paddle-out protests for coastal protection. Environmental commitment that predates the hospitality industry's discovery of it.
The food
Rooftop kitchen, organic and local. First Point visible from every seat at the bar.
The menu is California coastal — fresh, locally sourced, no shortcuts. Breakfast from eight. The rooftop bar opens at noon.
